The Ghost of Anna !

As the campaign for the 2012 elections takes off in the ultimate political battleground of UP, there are straws in the wind to suggest that the Anna effect may well outlast its founder. Take the case of Mayawati. Over the last six months, the Empress of Lucknow has sacked as many as 20 ministers on corruption charges. While Mayawati has never shied away from displaying an authoritarian streak, the manner in which she has chosen to virtually cleanse her cabinet suggests the BSP Supremo is acutely conscious of the damage the serious corruption charges have done to her image.

Now, take the case of Mayawati's great rival for power in Uttar Pradesh, the Samajwadi party. Last week, its new face Akhilesh Yadav did something his father, Mulayam Singh, would probably never have done. He refused to admit DP Yadav, once seen as the unquestioned don of western Uttar Pradesh, into the Samajwadi party fold, even removing party spokersperson Mohan Singh from his post for endorsing the don's entry. A candid Akhilesh publicly claimed that the Samajwadi Party no longer had time or space for the mafia. For a party which has been tainted by the tag of criminality, Akhilesh's decision marks an important shift in strategy. In the Mulayam Singh-Amar Singh years, the Samajwadi Party was seen as a cash-and-carry party which provided free entry to those with money and muscle power.

What Akhilesh Yadav is attempting now, Rahul Gandhi has been trying in Uttar Pradesh for some time now. In all his campaign speeches, Rahul emphasises on the need to break away from the web of caste, corruption and criminality that UP has been mired in for over two decades now. Caste is an inescapable reality, one which no party can ignore, but by taking a stand on not giving tickets to criminal candidates, Rahul is hoping to offset the organisational limitations confronting the Congress party on the ground.

It's a claim that the BJP too was hoping to make till the Babu Singh Kushwaha episode saw it score a virtual self-goal. Such was the anger within and outside the party, that the BJP was eventually forced to go through the bizarre charade of getting Mr Kushwaha to 'suspend' himself from party membership till he was cleared of corruption charges.

None of this is to suggest that there will be a dramatic change in the quality of elected representatives, especially in the absence of long-term election reforms. There will still be Bahubalis ('musclemen') who will make it to the Vidhan Sabha. But politics is as much about perception as it is about reality. And this is where the Anna factor creeps in.Even if Anna stays back in Ralegan Siddhi and doesn't campaign in the elections, his ghost will haunt the political class. Which is why the BJP was forced to change its chief minister in Uttarakhand six months before the elections, which is why the BJP-Akali combine in Punjab is facing a serious challenge and which is why every political party in UP is attempting an image makeover. In the end, the elections may still be decided by caste and community loyalties, but to believe it's business as usual would be a risky proposition this time .

The era of transformation

We Indians have made decent progress in several areas during the last 60 years. We have produced world-class scientists, engineers, journalists, soldiers, bureaucrats, politicians and doctors. We have built complex bridges and dams. We have sent satellites and rockets into space. We have increased the number of doctors tenfold.

Our India have increased life expectancy from 32 years to 65 years. We have built about 1.25 million miles of new roads; we have multiplied our steel production by over 50 times and cement production by almost 20 times. We have increased our exports from a few million dollars at the time of independence to more than $125 billion now, with about $150 billion of imports.

The Green revolution started in 1965, not only transformed India into a food-surplus economy from a food-deficit economy but also triggered the expansion of the rural, non-farm economy. The lives of at least 400 million to 500 million Indians have been uplifted due to this initiative.

The White revolution have made us  the largest producer of milk in the world thanks to Dr Verghese Kurien. Due to the economic reforms  Our hard currency reserves have gone up from a mere $1.5 billion in 1991 to over $220 billion today. No other technology has brought India--the urban and the rural--together so effectively as the 500-line EPABX designed and implemented by the Center for Development of Telematics under the leadership of Sam Pitroda.

Yash Pal's Satellite Instructional Television Experiment blossomed into a full-scale television facility connecting millions of villages of India. Television has made our political masters realize that their actions and inactions will be seen and judged by every citizen--from the forgotten villages of Assam to the activist villages of Kerala. This technology has given voice to the opinions of a billion people--the rich and the poor.

Dr. Homi Bhabha conceptualized the Indian nuclear program and initiated nuclear science research in India. His program has made possible successful utilization of nuclear energy in defense, power generation, medicine and allied areas. Our peaceful use of nuclear energy has raised India's prestige as a mature and responsible player in this field.N. Vittal's Software Technology Program, along with the economic reforms of 1991, laid the foundation for this industry's spectacular progress. India's information technology exports grew from a mere $150 million in 1991-92 to $31.4 billion in 2006-07, and is projected to reach $60 billion by 2010. The Indian IT industry is unique for several reasons. It focused on exports; benchmarked with the best global companies; followed the finest principles of corporate governance; created the largest number of jobs in the organized sector.

This transformations were all led by visionaries. These visionaries adopted and improved upon global benchmarks and settled for nothing less despite tremendous odds. In each of these initiatives the national government was a genuine catalyst whose extraordinary leaders helped fashion the India of today. They and so many others created an India where all Indians have the freedom to design, innovate, create and build their futures together.

Food Safety :Storage of non veg

A bit of knowledge on food safety :

When it comes to appliances that keep our foods safe, the refrigerator may be the most important because it slows down the growth of bacteria that cause food poisoning. At temperatures between 40 and 140 °F, bacteria grows most rapidly. That’s why we call this temperature range “the Danger Zone.”
A refrigerator set to 40  °F or below will protect most foods – but not forever. The cool temperatures slow down bacterial growth but they don’t stop the growth completely. So, it’s important to use food in a timely fashion to help maintain freshness and quality. Over time, even chilled foods will spoil.
Raw SteakHere are some basic guidelines for storing meat in the refrigerator.
  • Raw ground meats, all poultry, seafood, and variety meats: Refrigerate 1 to 2 days.
  • Raw roasts, steaks, and chops (beef, veal, lamb, and pork):  Refrigerate 3 to 5 days.
  • Cooked meat, poultry, and seafood: Store in the refrigerator 3 to 4 days.
