Arsenic Bug : The Future of life on Earth

The  NASA-supported researchers have discovered the first known microorganism on Earth able to thrive and reproduce using the toxic chemical arsenic. The microorganism, which lives in California's Mono Lake, substitutes arsenic for phosphorus in the backbone of its DNA and other cellular components.

"The definition of life has just expanded," said , NASA's associate administrator for the Science Mission Directorate at the agency's Headquarters in Washington. "As we pursue our efforts to seek signs of life in the solar system, we have to think more broadly, more diversely and consider life as we do not know it."
This finding of an alternative biochemistry makeup will alter biology textbooks and expand the scope of the search for life beyond Earth. The research is published in this week's edition of Science Express.
Carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus and sulfur are the six basic building blocks of all known forms of life on Earth. Phosphorus is part of the chemical backbone of DNA and RNA, the structures that carry genetic instructions for life, and is considered an essential element for all living cells.
Phosphorus is a central component of the energy-carrying molecule in all cells (adenosine triphosphate) and also the phospholipids that form all cell membranes. Arsenic, which is chemically similar to phosphorus, is poisonous for most life on Earth. Arsenic disrupts metabolic pathways because chemically it behaves similarly to phosphate.
"We know that some microbes can breathe arsenic, but what we've found is a microbe doing something new -- building parts of itself out of arsenic," said Felisa Wolfe-Simon, a NASA Astrobiology Research Fellow in residence at the U.S. Geological Survey in Menlo Park, Calif., and the research team's lead scientist. "If something here on Earth can do something so unexpected, what else can life do that we haven't seen yet?"

The newly discovered microbe, strain GFAJ-1, is a member of a common group of bacteria, the Gammaproteobacteria. In the laboratory, the researchers successfully grew microbes from the lake on a diet that was very lean on phosphorus, but included generous helpings of arsenic. When researchers removed the phosphorus and replaced it with arsenic the microbes continued to grow. Subsequent analyses indicated that the arsenic was being used to produce the building blocks of new GFAJ-1 cells.
The key issue the researchers investigated was when the microbe was grown on arsenic did the arsenic actually became incorporated into the organisms' vital biochemical machinery, such as DNA, proteins and the cell membranes. A variety of sophisticated laboratory techniques was used to determine where the arsenic was incorporated.
The team chose to explore Mono Lake because of its unusual chemistry, especially its high salinity, high alkalinity, and high levels of arsenic. This chemistry is in part a result of Mono Lake's isolation from its sources of fresh water for 50 years.

The results of this study will inform ongoing research in many areas, including the study of Earth's evolution, organic chemistry, biogeochemical cycles, disease mitigation and Earth system research. These findings also will open up new frontiers in microbiology and other areas of research.
"The idea of alternative biochemistries for life is common in science fiction," said Carl Pilcher, director of the NASA Astrobiology Institute at the agency's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif. "Until now a life form using arsenic as a building block was only theoretical, but now we know such life exists in Mono Lake."
The research team included scientists from the U.S. Geological Survey, Arizona State University in Tempe, Ariz., Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, Calif., Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Penn., and the Stanford Synchroton Radiation Lightsource in Menlo Park, Calif.

NASA's Astrobiology Program in Washington contributed funding for the research through its Exobiology and Evolutionary Biology program and the NASA Astrobiology Institute. NASA's Astrobiology Program supports research into the origin, evolution, distribution, and future of life on Earth

RBI ...GDP... INDIA

India's credit rating from stable to negative.high fiscal deficit, heavy debt burden and slow reforms are three complaints against India's management .We should focus on reduction in subsidies, a national service tax and a liberal foreign exchange regime.Corruption is a main cause for India's poor showing. Mr Stephen Covey has shown that the lower the GDP, the higher the Corruption Index and that India's low GDP matches its high corruption.

The Reserve Bank of India bears much of the responsibility for India's slowdown. Using the classic cure against inflation, it made the price of money high and hence, made it costly to acquire capital. It has barely cured inflation and instead penalised heavily honest savers in the country. The RBI failed to see that the culprits were mainly property developers and politicians; it has punished everyone, the good ones and the bad ones alike and, thereby, has indirectly promoted corruption.
The true cost of corruption depends on where it occurs. A man can carry a backpack of 30 kg for miles, but will find it difficult to do so on his head even when it weighs appreciably less. He may carry in his hand a suitcase weighing no more than 20 kg for a short distance only, but will be hobbled when even a kg is strapped to his ankles.
With corruption, it is the other way around. A petty official can be a nuisance but may not retard the economy much, but those at the top can, and do, slow down the economy inexorably.India's economic growth rate slipped to 5.3 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2011-12, lowest in nearly 9 years due to poor performance of the manufacturing and farm sectors.Persistent sluggishness in the economy due to slowdown in the manufacturing sector, coupled with decline in mining and quarrying, is likely to put pressure on the Reserve Bank of India to cut interest rates in its policy review in June.

Dreaming about ...

Dreams say what they mean, but they don't say it in daytime language. ~Gail Godwin

A dream is the most significant and integral part of a common man's life his ambitions and goals are what he suppose to be dreaming about every now and than .while sleeping he get visions but he is very unsure about its meaning and he dont even know where to go and ask or who is the right person to guide him about what he saw the other night !

Dreaming is important. We need to dream. Dreams come from our subconscious mind. We can learn a lot about ourselves in our dreams. Dreams force us to see things that we do not want to deal with. Dreams can help us remember something we couldn't remember when awake.

People have claimed to have seen a vision or a prophecy in a dream. There is no scientific evidence to back this up, however a lot of people have experienced déjà vu at one time or another. Déjà vu is the experience of being absolutely sure that one has experienced or witnessed a situation that they are currently in. It's likely the person had dreamed of the event before it took place.

Dreams that are prophetic usually lack symbols and seem very real to the dreamer. If the dream is regarding a tragedy that is about to take place the dreamer may feel a sense of dread or panic that goes along with the dream.

Once you start understanding your dreams things in life will begin to make more sense. You will begin to gain more self knowledge and start confronting your feelings. As you tap into your subconscious mind you may discover talents, fears and desires you never knew you had.

Here are some symbols with meanings which are part of the common visions we generally have while sleeping .

Aging: Could be fear of change or getting older. Could also symbolize forgiveness, letting go, wisdom, being at peace.
Babies: Something new, good news, a new project, happiness, responsibilities.
Being Chased: Fear, paranoia, running away from your problems.
Birth: A new project, the start of something new.
Children: Innocence, happiness, being carefree and playful. Could also mean immaturity .
Death: An end of one phase and a beginning to another.
Dogs: Loyalty, friendship, trust and companionship.
Driving: Are you at the wheel? If you are then this dream is positive and means you are in control of your life.
Falling: This has to be one of the most common dreams on this list. Some meanings are insecurities, fear, loss and worry.
Flying: Freedom and liberation.
Ladders and Stairs: Walking upstairs means success. Walking downstairs means failure. A spiraling stair case can mean your life is 'spiraling out of control'.
Lost: Not feeling in control, feelings of helplessness. Losing valuables /money could be a dream of contrary and mean unexpected gain.
New house: New phase in life, new beginnings, happy endings.
Nudity: Dreaming of being naked in public is very common. Usually in this dream, nobody notices you are nude. These types of dream can mean that you are feeling vulnerable.
School: A common dream for adults is being back in school, missing a class, being late or failing a test and then not being able to graduate. If you have had this dream you may be feeling like you are failing at something or are living below your potential.
Snakes: Watch out for back stabbers and false friends.
Strangers: Strangers in our dreams represent ourselves. Could be a part of our personalities we are not consciously aware of, or could be a hidden talent that we haven't yet discovered.
Teeth falling out: Another dream that is extremely common. There are many different theories to what this could mean so it's important to pay attention to other symbols in your dream. Teeth falling out could mean poor health, feelings of unattractiveness, fear of aging, general anxiety or a fear of rejection.
Water: Seeing clear water is a positive omen of good things to come. Dark, polluted or murky water may be a warning of bad things to come due to poor choices.

Our Farmers

Everybody knows that farmer produces food grain what they take as food. Everybody should understand that farmer not only gives us food he also  supplie oxygen from his plants/crops. He plays a role to make rain by transpiration from his plants. He only gets a little money for his food. But what about the oxygen and rains made by him.

Indian Agricultural Sector has many challenge on its field. Brilliant Brains of India don't involve them in this sector as it is not so worthy to them. Larger percentage of Indian farmers have less land and are basically illiterate or less educated -these are the obstacles to understand and apply the technology. Moreover the Government Subsidies don't reach to themselves as the larger part of the subsidies are theft by the middlemen or bought by the rich farmers. Due to gambling on monsoon and for less use of Alternative methods like Crop Rotation have made it riskier whereas Crop Insurance facility to the farmers are not so wide. In the case of Irrigation, they are more dependent on Underground Water and lesser in Canal Water -which is more costly. The Infrastructure of Storing Crop, like Cold Storage are not available on every area -this is why 30% of Yearly Production of Vegetables in India are rotten.

Unarguably every farmer needs subsidy in present political system.Subsidy can be removed provided farmers are given the opportunity to fix price for their products like others in other sectors and are allowed to export their products with out govt intervention.if every thing goes goes fine and once the product comes to market, minimum support price that is promised to the farmer is not given many times.People want all the pulses, food grains, milk, meat, eggs at a cheaper price and no one fights for the farmer who feeds billions of mouths. If oil companies go in to losses govt jumps in and increases price more than 10 to 15 times in few years and why not the same for the poor farmer?

one need to notice that Indian youth are no longer interested in doing farming. Number of youth doing farming are decreasing to a greater extent. None neither the farmers son nor the farm workers son interested nor their parents want their kids to do farming. This explains the scenario. Who is going to feed billions of mouths. As rightly said by our fromer president Sh. Abdul kalam "JAI JAWAN JAI KISAN JAI VIGYAN". Scientific measures should be implied to improve the coniditions of agriculture. Another green revolution should come in India.

A New Beginning of Hope

Uttar Pradesh is known for voting on cast lines rather than voting on development but Sahvajpur ,a village with 534 voters of Ghatampur assembly of Kanpur with voters consisting of Kurmis,Yadavs ,Koris ,Nishads boycotted voting and none of them voted .Because the one who was supported and elected in 2009 Lok Sabha Election did not show up after winning .

Another Manikpur village just 7 Km from Etawah ,but electricity is not there till now ,while surrounded with villages glittering with electric bulbs so this village of 434 voters boycotted the assembly election and none of them voted. One Beri, a Hamirpur constituency village kept itself away from votes this time as it has no connecting pucca road .This village of 3300 voters also didn't see a single vote being cast.

Jamalpur village's 1900 voters boycotted the polls as they were not given compensation by the government for the 100 acres of land acquired for the dam in 1980's and still didn't received a single penny .

Above cases should be an eye opener for the people sitting in the Parliament of India . People have started using polls as a weapon and if the government or the bureaucrats does not listen and give the right full dues to the common man than he will slam by not  voting .This might be a beginning this time only Uttar Pradesh and next might be the whole country and if the situations does not improve it could be regular feature and the corrupt ones can be brought
to books soon this way .This shall be taken as a wake up call.

Today while reading the blog a thought clicked in my mind and that was about giving a new name to it and so after a lot of consideration i have done it .Firstly I believe most of the topics covered by me here are those which i myself feel about .than as i am just a lay man or a common man like you so the name best suites this blog is The common men vents here I can vents my thoughts which can help in making opinions .

This exercise can also lead to attracting some more readers as the new name is a bit catchy and explain more about the blog .Now also the content of this blog varies from politics to farmer to environment to festivities .A lot  of diversity and colors and the non monotonous nature attracts people to read it .

So welcome here for an experience .

Patience

The lesser known cousin of the seven sins.  And indeed, “patience is a virtue” . Our life is a marathon, but whether you define success by recognition, respect, money, power or fame – success is subjective, relative and fluid and boils down to Ambition, Vision, Determination, Execution, Luck and Timing

“I haven’t got a lot of patience”, Jeffrey Katzenberg
It’s not that patience isn’t valued; it’s that no one else is actually all that patient.  Whether you are growing a business or chasing a girl or trying to lose weight or auditioning on American Idol, no one will sit around and wait for results.
Last week I saw a man on a bike flying down the busiest street in our town.  I thought to myself, “you nut, why don’t you use the sidewalk?”  As I passed him I saw that it was a friend of mine and immediately thought “oh, he must be in a hurry, I hope he stays safe on this road”.  Again, a stark example of thinking the worst of someone when we don’t know them, but having great patience when we do.
Some scholars have defined patience as a good human characteristic or a positive psychological attitude, by virtue of which we refrain from doing that which is not good.Which is perfect, Human beings cannot live a proper, healthy life without patience.

Our country India

India is the world's largest, oldest, continuous civilization. It is the world's largest democracy which never invaded any country in her last 10000 years of history. The World's first university was established in Takshashila in 700BC. More than 10,500 students from all over the world studied more than 60 subjects. The University of Nalanda built in the 4th century BC was one of the greatest achievements of ancient India in the field of education.India invented the Number System. The decimal system was developed in India in 100 BC. Zero was invented by Aryabhatta an Indian again.

Sanskrit is the mother of all the European languages. Sanskrit is the most suitable language for computer software - a report in Forbes magazine, July 1987.Ayurveda is the earliest school of medicine known to humans. Charaka, the father of medicine consolidated Ayurveda 2500 years ago. The art of Navigation was bornin the river Sindhu 6000 years ago.Algebra, trigonometry and calculus came from India. Quadratic equations were by Sridharacharya in the 11th century. The largest numbers the Greeks and the Romans used were 106 whereas Hindus used numbers as big as 10**53(10 to the power of 53) with specific names as early as 5000 BCE during the Vedic period.

Chess (Shataranja or AshtaPada) was invented in India.Sushruta is the father of surgery. 2600 years ago he and health scientists of his time conducted complicated surgeries like cesareans, cataract, artificial limbs, fractures, urinary stones and even plastic surgery and brain surgery. Usage of anesthesia was well known in ancient India. Over 125 surgical equipment were used. Deep knowledge of anatomy, physiology, etiology, embryology, digestion, metabolism, genetics and immunity is also found in many texts.

India is the largest English speaking nation in the world ,with second largest pool of Scientists and Engineers in the World. The four religions born in India, Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism, are followed by 25% of the world's population.

The above reasons are more than enough to make our country great .

The Naxalite

The Naxalite-Maoists, as they call themselves, are the liberators, redeemers and saviors representing the down trodden workers and landless / poor farmers who have been entangled into vicious circle of poverty, misery and wretchedness. The Indian social order and state culture treats them contemptuously without any regard for human dignity and self esteem. Hence their patience withered away and they turned against the repressive system of government, draconian legislation, evasive political practices and mischievous manifestation of elected representatives, feudal pundits and bureaucrats. They frequently challenge the writ of the government and disrupt the communication system.

Being the spokesmen of poor farmers and neglected tribes, the Naxalites enjoy the popular support of the masses they represent. They command the hearts and souls of the people and have started a legitimate freedom movement against Indian rule. They have the will and the capacity to fight and defeat the Indian Security Forces. Since they enjoy considerable influence in five Indian states therefore their potential to crush Indian Security Forces appears to be a viable assessment and a crystal-clear possibility.

The state government has banned the Communist Party of India (CPI) terming it a terrorist organization. The ban came in the backdrop of violent incidents in Lal Garh and the ongoing operation by Police and Security Forces to reclaim the area. Political differences, especially those between the CPI (M) government in West Bengal and the Congress at the Center, have affected the operation against the Maoists.

Indian spin masters are busy to give a new twist to Maoists movement by coining links with Lashker-e-Taiba (LeT) a figment of imagination and a white lie. The aim is to reinvigorate propaganda against Pakistan and cover own administrative mismanagement. Indian intelligence agencies have already been tasked to implicate LeT for providing training to the Maoists. Actually they are convinced that Maoists movement is totally home grown having the potential to defeat Indian Security Forces for its  cause. Media and human rights organizations  project human rights violations committed by Indian Security Forces against Maoists movement.

Out of 630 districts the Indian government has declared 220 districts as the Maoist affected areas. As per government announced figures more than 200 security personnel have been killed during the past six months, however, there is no official mention of collateral damage, civilian causalities and or losses suffered by Maoists guerillas.

The extremist groups are collecting crores of rupees from all types of traders, contractors or any other persons engaged in any economic activity. They are also imposing levy on the farmers. Collection of money is so easy that many unemployed local rowdies are finding it an easy way of making money.

Travel 3000 km to find a bride !

The eligible Jat boys from Haryana now a days travel 3,000 km across the country to find themselves a bride. With increasingly fewer girls in Haryana, they are seeking brides from as far away as Kerala.Soon this may be the story in Rajasthan too if the things didn't change .The girls have not vanished overnight. Decades of sex determination tests and female foeticide that has acquired genocide proportions are finally catching up with states in India. This is only the tip of the demographic and social problems confronting India in the coming years. Skewed sex ratios have moved beyond the states of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh. With news of increasing number of female foetuses being aborted from Orissa to Bangalore there is ample evidence to suggest that the next census will reveal a further fall in child sex ratios throughout the country.

The decline in child sex ratio in India is evident by comparing the census figures. In 1991, the figure was 947 girls to 1000 boys. Ten years later it had fallen to 927 girls for 1000 boys.Since 1991, 80% of districts in India have recorded a declining sex ratio with the state of Punjab being the worst.States like Maharashtra, Gujarat, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Haryana have recorded a more than 50 point decline in the child sex ratio in this period.

Despite these horrific numbers, foetal sex determination and sex selective abortion by unethical medical professionals has today grown into a Rs. 1,000 crore industry. Social discrimination against women, already entrenched in Indian society, has been spurred on by technological developments that today allow mobile sex selection clinics to drive into almost any village or neighbourhood unchecked. In a recent landmark judgment the Mumbai High Court upheld an amendment to the PCPNDT Act banning sex selection treatment. The Court pronounced that pre natal sex determination would be as good as female foeticide. Pre-conception sex determination violated a woman’s right to live and was against the Constitution.

There have been only two convictions -- a fine of 300 rupees and another fine of 4,000 rupees -- from over 400 cases lodged under the Pre-conception and Pre-natal Diagnostic Techniques Act.Bringing about changes in the demand for sex determination is a long process and has to be tackled through women’s education and empowerment including the right to property and land rights. States in the North East and in Kerala where women have these rights show a comparatively better sex ratio.

some signs are visible that demonstrate that the fight can be won.Lakhanpal, a small village in Punjab has turned the tide of male births for the first time. In a state that has the lowest sex ratio in the country, the village boasts of 1,400 girls for every 1000 boys.Arvind Kumar, the collector of Hyderabad district has illustrated the power of the Act. Hyderabad had the lowest child sex ratio (0-6 years) in Andhra Pradesh. After taking over in 2004 he tracked down all 389 diagnostic clinics in the city and took action. 361 ultrasound scan centres were issued notices for non compliance with the PNDT Act.Licenses of 91 centres were cancelled. 83 machines were seized and 71 released after an undertaking and fine. Three suppliers were prosecuted for supplying machines to clinics with no registration licenses.

We salute the above people who are helping in balancing the ratio its a tough task but enforcement of stringent laws to cent percent accuracy will save girls and than only our boys will not go too far to get a bride .

Why Work ?

Why ?
Why do we work ? ...................On the face of it ,its a stupid question.

To live a decent life or to make our time worth ,both are important .But getting up everyday and going to work and than spending that hard earned money on our loved one some might think it insanity, while love and affection or the pleasure and sense of pride is what relaxes us.

just putting food on the table or shelter can't be the reason for working so hard .I feel the insecurity of loosing the asset which we possess at any given time can be a motivating factor for anyone to work .Our society have made some untold rules where adding to ones wealth and property is one of the duty of the surviver and it might be the reason why we need to work .sitting without any work will never stop our mind from thinking and the thoughts have to be materialised only by working .

well working even keep our body fit and in shape or else obesity and other health hazards can grip us .when we die we won't be carrying our high school certificates or any gold medals which we have achieved to heaven; neither the money or respect which we earn in our present life could ever come useful once we die. So why do we humans make so much of fuss when we know already that its of no use. I am not trying to assert that you shouldn't study or work because we all are going to die one day...but what i am asking is, what are we actually supposed to do with our lives?

for the sustainability of our next generations, man never dies, remains alive in the shape of his/her next generations.
Who are the successful people of this world now, sometimes in the past anyone of their forefathers have worked hard and given sacrifices for their generations.life goes on for generations and the responsiveness that we have to give something to the coming generations might be the force behind the whole system of work culture.

Giving

Once there were two brothers who inherited their father's land. The brothers divided the land in half and each one farmed his own section. Over time, the older brother married and had six children, while the younger brother never married.

One night, the younger brother lay awake. "It's not fair that each of us has half the land to farm," he thought. "My brother has six children to feed and I have none. He should have more grain than I do."

So that night the younger brother went to his silo, gathered a large bundle of wheat, and climbed the hill that separated the two farms and over to his brother's farm. Leaving the wheat in his brother's silo, the younger brother returned home, feeling pleased with himself.

Earlier that very same night, the older brother was also lying awake. "It's not fair that each of us has half the land to farm," he thought. "In my old age my wife and I will have our grown children to take care of us, not to mention grandchildren, while my brother will probably have none. He should at least sell more grain from the fields now so he can provide for himself with dignity in his old age."

So that night, too, he secretly gathered a large bundle of wheat, climbed the hill, left it in his brother's silo, and returned home, feeling pleased with himself.

The next morning, the younger brother was surprised to see the amount of grain in his barn unchanged. "I must not have taken as much wheat as I thought," he said, bemused. "Tonight I'll be sure to take more."

That very same moment, his older brother was also standing in his barn, musing much the same thoughts.

After night fell, each brother gathered a greater amount of wheat from his barn and in the dark, secretly delivered it to his brother's barn. The next morning, the brothers were again puzzled and perplexed. "How can I be mistaken?" each one scratched his head. "There's the same amount of grain here as there was before I cleared the pile for my brother. This is impossible! Tonight I'll make no mistake - I'll take the pile down to the very floor. That way I'll be sure the grain gets delivered to my brother."

The third night, more determined than ever, each brother gathered a large pile of wheat from his barn, loaded it onto a cart, and slowly pulled his haul through the fields and up the hill to his brother's barn. At the top of the hill, under the shadow of a moon, each brother noticed a figure in the distance. Who could it be?

When the two brothers recognized the form of the other brother and the load he was pulling behind, they realized what had happened. Without a word, they dropped the ropes to their carts and embraced ..
